El inglés en el sistema educativo español
Hoy en día los niños empiezan a estudiar inglés con 3 años en las escuelas públicas. Dado que la educación es obligatoria en España de los 6 a los 16 años, los niños estudian inglés durante 13 años, que deberían ser más que suficientes para, al menos, tener un conocimiento intermedio y poderse manejar en conversaciones "normales" o del día a día.
These days kids get started learning English from the age of 3 in the Public schools. Since Schooling in Spain is compulsory from the ages of 6 to 16, kids spend 13 years learning English, which should be enough to be able to keep a day-to-day conversation.
Anteriormente, la iniciación a la lengua extranjera se hacía a los 12 años. Esto significa que se ha aumentado considerablemente el horario lectivo en esta materia. La cuestión es si va acompañada de resultados, o bien, si los resultados obtenidos compensan los recursos empleados.
Parece ser que no. Veamos los defectos y posibles soluciones.
Back in the day kids were introduced to the foreign language at the age of 12. This means that the amount of hours invested in this subject has increased dramatically. The thing is if it comes with results, or, the outcomes counterbalance the resources that have been used.
I don't think so. Let's look at the flaws and possible solutions.
Una lengua se aprende mejor cuanto más temprano. Por lo tanto habría que dedicar gran parte del esfuerzo en la educación primaria (3-12 años) y especialmente en los primeros años. En esta etapa debería prescindirse absolutamente de la gramática y dedicarse al la escucha del idioma. En internet existen innumerables recursos gratis -y otros comerciales que se podrían contratar-: dibujos animados, películas, juegos en flash, canciones...
When it comes to learning a foreign language, the earlier you begin, the better. Therefore the greatest endeavor should be carried out through both Pre-School and Primary School (3-12) particularly during the early years. During this time developing the listening skills should be put on the front burner as doing away with grammar. On the internet there is lots of both free material and for a fee .
En nuestro país pasan los cursos uno tras otro y los niños siempre están estudiando lo mismo: números, colores, el verbo To Be etc. Se da el caso de profesores de inglés que ni siquiera saben hablar bien ese idioma (por supuesto lo dominan sobre el papel).

Existen buenas herramientas en internet. Un gran ejemplo: Daily Dictation es un excelente recurso. Hoy muchas aulas disponen de pizarra electrónica y proyectores y conexión a internet -se puede descargar y poner en cualquier TV-. se podría trabajar 10- 15 minutos usando recursos como Daily Dictation y el resto de la clase comentando y ampliando los videos.
He aquí un ejemplo de Shane (Coach Shane) en Seul. Obviamente esta destinado a coreanos aunque nos poedemos hacer una idea.(más abajo)

Además debería estimularse el intercambio entre alumnos de los países de lengua española e inglesa, tanto real como virtualmente (mediante convenios, redes sociales educativas, veraneos... por ejemplo).
Lo que está claro es que el sistema actual no parece el mejor método para el aprendizaje de lenguas extranjeras. El método gramatical ya se sabe que no es el adecuado. Existen herramientas, hay un gran número de horas lectivas, y cambiando la forma de enseñanza deberíamos obtener mejores resultados. Y no podemos esperar generaciones... ¡ Refundemos el sistema !

No todo el mundo tiene la posibilidad de vivir en un país de habla inglesa; Inglaterra, Irlanda, Escocia, Gales, Australia, Nueva Zelanda, Estados Unidos para poder hablar inglés con nativos todos los días. Tener la posibilidad de hablar normalmente con nativos es una ventaja que podrá ayudarte a ganar confianza, pero... ¿te ayudará con tu pronunciación? ¿Crees que en el mundo real los angloparlantes van a corregir tu pronunciación, simplemente porque te preocupa? ¿Crees que los angloparlantes en el mundo real acaso se paran a pensar en cómo pronuncian? ¿Crees que los angloparlantes, van a tomarse la molestia de corregirte cada vez que te equivocas o pronuncias mal, dandote una charla de cómo tienes que hacerlo correctamente? Francamente, la respuesta a todas esas preguntas es NO.

Having the possibility to talk with native speakers on a regular basis is a perk which might help you build your English confidence, but... Will that really be helpful for your pronunciation? Do you believe that native speakers out there in the real world are going to be willing to correct your pronunciation just because it bothers you? Do you believe that native speakers out there even think about the sounds they make as they speak naturally in their day-to day life? Do you believe that native speakers out there are going to bother to correct you every time you mispronounce as lecturing you on how you need to do it properly? Honestly, the answer to all those questions is pretty much NO.

As a result you become familiar with the culture and its vocabulary, but... once again... will that be helpful for your pronunciation? Rather little.

I'd like to improve my English dramatically. Sometimes I think that maybe I'm not good at it because I don't have a flare for it... What do you think I might do? Should I accept it is too late for me as well as I'm not cut out for it?

¿ Quieres estar con los mejores ? Do you want to join the best ones?
A finales de Agosto del pasado año (2013), me vi en la necesidad de refrescar mi inglés. Mi historia es como la de tantos españoles: 3 años de aprendizaje en la escuela y 4 de instituto con el mismo resultado que la mayoría: no puedo mantener una conversación con un nativo, ni entender las películas.
In late August 2013 I found myself forced to brush up my English. My English journey was like so many Spaniards' : 3 years in Middle School plus 4 years in High School with the same outcome as most people: I am not able to keep a conversation with a native speaker, nor understand movies.
Me puse a buscar recursos en internet. Tengo experiencia con la informática, y además sabía lo que estaba buscando porque tengo ciertos conocimientos filológicos y entendía por qué fracasan la mayoría de los métodos de enseñanza (sobre todo en la educación pública): están basados principalmente en la gramática.
I started surfing through the internet looking for good stuff. I was aware of what I was looking for since I have some knowledge on linguistics thus I understand why most English teaching methods fail (specially in the public education): They are focused primarily on grammar.
Encontré a Coach Shane por lo citado anteriormente: saber que buscaba + conocimiento en búsquedas + algo de suerte ( por qué no decirlo ).
I found Coach Shane since I did know what I was looking for.
Si uno teclea directamente en Google o YouTube: método para aprender inglés, o cursos de inglés o algo por el estilo, no darás con los mejores. ¿ Por qué ?. Bueno, sencillamente porque, como en otros aspectos de la vida, hay mucho negocio generado alrededor de la enseñanza. Negocios que gastan grandes cantidades dinero en publicidad, y por ende, en posicionarse en los medios digitales. Pero ¿ son por ello los mejores ?. Pues en la mayoría de los casos la respuesta es... no.

Well in my opinion this is because they spend a lot of money in marketing in order to position themselves in The Internet. But, are they the best? In most cases no, they are not.
En España tenemos el caso de un Tejano que ha sabido, ha entendido nuestra idiosincrasia y sabe que nos gusta mucho que nos expliquen en nuestra propia lengua. Y ha triunfado. Pero sinceramente, no parece la mejor forma de enseñar una lengua.
En otros anuncios de otros cursos de inglés para españoles se repite el procedimiento: nativos de lengua inglesa prometiéndonos en castellano con mal acento resultados en inglés. Y vaya si funciona comercialmente.

Sus canales en YouTube son una excelente herramienta para el aprendizaje del inglés. Y el reto es que se expanda, que sea conocido en escuelas de idiomas, aulas de bachiller, periódicos etc.
